The South Sinai Governorate runs from Taba on the Gulf of Aqaba over the northern hills of Al Tih to Ras Mosallah on the Suez Gulf to the west and Ras Mohammed to the south. The regional capital city is Al Tor. The South Sinai region has a wonderful all year round climate, and its stunning beaches are lapped by the Red Sea. Ras Mohammed is renowned for its exquisitely beautiful coral reefs and marine life. It is now a nature reserve and hence very popular with scuba divers. It is positioned 57 km from Sharm el Sheikh at the peak of the Sinai peninsula. Sharm el-Sheikh it self is a very popular resort with holiday makers from around the globe, and attracts divers and snorkellers because of its abundance of brightly coloured marine life. The Red Sea is one of the top dive sites in the world. Sharm is also a haven for sun worshippers looking to relax. Dahab is another popular resort, situated 81 km north of Sharm, and is rated one of the most beautiful beaches in the Sinai region. 87 km from Dahab on the Gulf of Aqaba lies Nuweiba, and 75 km further along lies Taba, with a host of bays and coves as well as stunning mountain and coastal views.


This coastline attracts tourists who enjoy playing in the sea or just soaking up the sun. At every resort, there are dive shops and dive centres where you can choose from an extensive list of dive sites according to your ability, or take the opportunity to learn to dive and qualify in warm water, with the added bonus of seeing some amazing underwater sights. Alternatively, snorkelling is easy and there are plenty of boats for hire. Other water sports include water skiing, windsurfing, surfing and sailing. There are many safari trips into the desert available to the tourist, varying in length from a day to 5 or 6 days, staying in tents along the way and enjoying the clear night skies. Alternatively you can take a trip to Cairo or Luxor and soak up some ancient history. There are also several golf courses in the area.

There are some wonderful bedouin craft markets in the main resorts. A trip to St Catherine`s Monastery and Mount Sinai can be combined . Situated 19 km from Ras Sidr in South Sinai, St Catherine`s dates back to the 6th century and was built in an oasis. There is a motel nearby with around 200 beds.
